Where It All Started

In 1895, a physical education director named William G. Morgan invented volleyball in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He called it Mintonette — a gentler alternative to basketball for older guys who didn't want to get knocked around. Within a year, the name changed to volleyball, and the world was never the same.

The Game Goes Global

Volleyball spread fast. By the early 1900s it had jumped to Canada, Cuba, Brazil, and beyond. By 1964, it was an Olympic sport — and it hasn't looked back since.
